I use kmail (now kmail2) to access mail via IMAP, then when I'm finished with an email to move it to a local archive folder (somewhat like gmail, but not on the cloud). What would be a great help for this is:

• Direct archive support: one local archive folder for each account, and a shortcut to archive messages.
• Or flexible shortcuts: be able to write rules (a bit like filters but applied manually via a keyboard shortcut), which can move messages to another folder based on the originating folder.
