There are many application which have this feature build in. For Firefox there is an add-on that does this but unfortunately not for Linux.
There is of course this task bar that instead of window list has icons but I don't like it. I prefer traditional window list and I use it for switching between running applications and its windows. I noticed that many times during a day I start the same application, like 20 times I start a web browser, 30 times Dolphin etc. And after I have done a small, short task I close it so that it doesn't disturb me anymore. Minimizing is not that good because it is still on the panel window list and distracts my attention. I know that I can move it to another desktop, but then I would need to switch between desktop and check if it is open. Not a very good solution. So minimizing to tray is for me like putting an application aside for a moment so that it doesn't disturb me on panel task list but still being able to keep it on hand and have a quick access to it. Closing and opening takes time while keeping application open and running doesn't takes so much memory or CPU if it doesn't do anything. If possible, please develop minimize to tray function as window behavior option that can be set for any application individually, as a kwin function or a special widget or whatever. In System settings there are window behavior settings. I imagine there should be option for this. |

Try this:
For example:
Unfortunately, it works not for all programs: I tried to make
but didn't got the tray icon. But for most software, it works. And the windows don't appear in Alt+Tab while they are hidden with a click on tray icon. But it doesn't seem to have KWin buttons or even hotkeys for minimizing/maximizing windows. |

Thanks for the tip. I found that the author of ksystraycmd is KDE developer Richard Moore.
http://xmelegance.org/customising-windo ... viour.html I will try that but I hope he can develop it further, so that it will become an option accessible from System settings. Now when I click with right mouse button on kwin in open application window in Advance settings there are additional window settings. I wish it could be as easy as marking the appropriate option in this dialog window. |
