You should see the contact photo (if you have one) in the head of an email in kmail and when you compose a new message.

also you should be able to select a folder where you collect lots of images, that are randomly selected for each contact if you don't have a contact photo.

also you could choose to have a generated avatar from gravatar (Identicon, MonsterID, Wavatar, Retro), vanillicon or unicornify as replacement if you have no picture

this could look like the thunderbird addon "display contact photo"

Re: Show contact photos in kmail

Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:10 pm
I have never felt urge to see photo of person I am writing e-mail to. I can't imagine why anyone would like to see some random image if photo is not assigned to contact.

Could you post some user case where this would actually be useful? Why KMail developers should devote their time for this feature?

I don't think that "other clients do that" is sufficient justification.

mail programs are a very dry thing, that's, why It is very useful, if you see a certain picture connected with an email.
humans work like this, they are visual beings.

sure, not everyone would like to see this, thats, why it should be an option, but whats the point, if you put an image into every contac, if you don't see it anywhere else?

i guess, you could reuse a lot of code of that thunderbird plugin, so it should be easy done and you would make kmail much more attractive to the public through this.

shouldn't this be an option to "Fancy Headers"?

it's on the wishlist for a long time already:

An option for VisiGlyphs if you have no picture should also be implemented.

I wonder how easy this would be to go about implementing.
I'd work on this over the weekend, should be a two-hour thing.

Does anyone have an idea on how it should look?

As far as I can tell, at least with Google contacts I see their picture if they set one in 4.10, at least in the message view.

This is something that I have wanted for quite some time. It will happen. We're already working on kpeople (a library that will be used by both telepathy and pim), and maybe I can find someone to properly export the digikam data to Nepomuk. That way, we will have all the person information in one place, and we should be able to show their photos.

I'm not sure about how the UI is going to look. That's not my area. But we will provide kmail with the required information. I'm hoping that all of this will be done by 4.11. I obviously cannot guarantee anything.
