file: rename/move menu option

Fri Jul 20, 2012 10:15 am
Basic description: ability to move and rename open documents in calligra/kate/krita/kdevelop/any other document editor.

You must have found so many times you create a document, then want to rename or move the file and have to close, use a shell or file-manager to rename the file, then open it again. So why not integrate that into document editors? Basic idea: click file, move/rename, a dialog exactly like that for "save as" pops up, you enter the new file location, and the application does the rest. OK, so my GIMP skills aren't so good, but the image should give you some idea how this would work:

One interesting extension this would allow is default document names (which can easily be changed). Say, all new documents are given a name like Documents/new/2012-07-20-12:22-Planes-and-Boats.txt where the text "Planes and Boats" is taken from the first few words of the document. May/may not be a good idea, but this is independent of the main idea.

This must be done by each application (KDE-base can provide function to do the job, but it's up to developers to provide menu entry that calls it). Some developers may implement idea in their next release, some may not like it and refuse to do anything. Unless this is made part of HIG (and I heard some KDE devs are not eager to follow HIG), we may end up with huge mess when some applications do that, some not and each has menu entry in different place.

Also, you might have not noticed that KDE filepicker (dialog that allows you to save documents) supports context menu. You can move file to trash or open file manager in certain directory. You may use Shift+Del to remove file permanently.
I tend to create new directory for each project that I work on. Then I put that directory into Places. This way opening it in file manager is just two click away (Open Dolphin → Click Places entry). Or I can use KRunner for that.

"Save as" functions as rename/move to some degree. You must only remember to remove old document afterwards (which can be done from save dialog, but may be inconvenient if you move file across directories).

Finally does anyone changes name of his documents so often, that he can't just close application and do it from file manager?

Of course it's up to developers, but I am not convinced that we really need it.

True, it would need to be done everywhere, but it's fairly simple.

Yes, I know the file picker supports a context menu. This still means moving a document requires "save as, pick new location, use the open/save as dialog again, navigate back to the old location, delete" which is a lot more work than an automated solution (and I'm used to automating things).

You can use the places box all you like. I've half-given up using it because I use far too many different directories to save things in.

I guess kate/kdevelop is where I'm most interested in seeing this. Some IDEs already have facilities for renaming files. Perhaps I was generalising too much by suggesting other applications do the same.
