I frequently have make screencasts (e.g. for video tutorials or filing bugs). One missing feature on KDE was capturing mouse presses when doing screencasts or presentations. It seems that at some point recorditnow did support mouse capture, but that functionality no longer works.
I would propose to have a separate kwin effect which would do exactly that. I have started on an effect and finished the initial version. The results can be seen here: http://youtu.be/HcW2EAN1hRQ Would this be useful to other people as well? Would it be ok to integrate that effect with the built in ones? If yes, I need to change the CMakeList.txt. I would also like to get some suggestions on how to tweak the UI to make it look better. Unfortunately, the capture software does not do a good job with the capturing of the effect yet. It looks much better while running on the desktop |

Very nice!
I don't do screencasting myself, but I believe that people who do would find it very useful. It may also be used in training courses, where teacher does something on his computer and this is shown on wall behind him, for other to do the same. As for suggestions - instead of built-in color list, please use KDE color picker dialog (see kcolorchooser as example). Also, think about all these options - is this really necessary to have "Advanced" tab? Couldn't it be all in one window without tabs? I think that you should post your code at https://git.reviewboard.kde.org .
Best regards

Makes absolutely sense in my eyes. not only when recording screen casts, obviously you have the same requirement for presentations, and this is where I would certainly use that effect immediately when available. So:
Go for it, publish ! |

Oh you can still define a custom color. Its not immediately obvious, but when you scroll up in the options there is a "Choose..." option, which opens the color picker. This is the combo which is being used in the Mouse Mark Effect.
I think those options can be very intimidating at first and should not be displayed for the average Joe. Instead, I believe in providing very good defaults, but I still know that Ill find someone who wants to change these settings. So he will have the advanced tab. |
