Why doesn't dolphin show the filesystem used?

I think that would make for a good wishlist to be filed on bugs.kde.org. I imagine it's simple enough to include this information in the properties dialog of a folder along with the mountpoint and device usage...

Why would you care about filesystem used?
Honestly, I would also remove information about mount point. It is beyond my comprehension that anybody needs that info and can not open Konsole and use df.

What's the point of having GUI if you want to have all done by console?

What's the point of having GUI if it's not easy/informative to use?

And the amount of usage/left a disk drive is even important than knowing the filesystem used.

I agree. When you inserting an unknon disk (usb or sd card) there are cases where you want to know size, free space, file system type. Therre are of course applications that show this info, like partionmanager or gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest). The latter even shows S.M.A.R.T. info from the disk.

But it would be a logical place to show this info in dolphin.

And on the command line? Hah, why not delete kde entirely then. I guess if your good at it you wouldn't need a GUI at all and type your Latex doc in vi.

Me, I've been there and like to get my work done by point and click.

Hey now! I type up LaTeX documents in vim and I still like nice gui feedback on things like this. Don't clump us all together! :)

I asked for one particular user-case that would justify adding this info to GUI. Instead of exaggerating, you should just tell why anybody would need that.

I am using Linux for few years and I only needed information about filesystem used by device when I was trying to manually mount it. If I was trying to manually mount it, it meant that automounter (HAL/udisks/my own script) was not working properly. If automounter was not working, it meant that I had no GUI available at the moment. Most likely because I was trying to recover my system from serious breakage.

I see no real purpose in adding information about filesystem used to GUI. But I am willing to learn. ferry, you say that "there are cases". Would you mind to share one of these with me?

Filesystem can be one of way to detect which one partition you are looking at. For example, after a fresh install you are looking at your partitions, and you have two different Windows installations among them: one WinXP on FAT32 and one Win7 on NTFS, both with labels like «Windows» or something similar. And you want to remember which is where. Having filesystem's icon or just line somewhere in a «Properties» window can make it easier for you to understand it.

It is not a killer-feature, but it is useful in some cases. And, I think, good GUI must have such rarely needed but useful elements.

Although we could argue if this is correct solution to given problem (I believe it is not), I am happy that this tread is finally getting descriptions of user-cases where this could come handy.

What do you have against userfriendly GUI?

How do you think that newbies get their hard drive filesystems or free spaces checked up.

Not everyone is familiar with the console

What makes you think that newbie cares about filesystem used? What makes you think that this information is actually meaningful to them?
I'm only asking about descriptions of scenarios when this information would be useful. greatperson provided one. I would like to see more, because I am obviously missing something.
I have never said that free space box should be removed, so I don't know what second part of your question refer to.

What's the point of having multiple filesystems anyway if it's newbies bussiness? How about kernel/installer switching it randomly to user and not showing it anywhere what system is used? That's basically what you are suggesting.

The disadvantages/advantages should be told somewhere, but when I run the kubuntu installer I had no clue what was good for me so I picked the ext4, because it was the latest ext series.

The installer didn't told the differences or advances/disadvances and it didn't told the meaning of different folder types. This is a bit off topic, but installing linux could be more informative.

Adding show filesystem code to the dolphin is just few bytes and some minutes of work.
Gui should be INFORMATIVE and not HIDING information.

I think the subject should be changed to something else. Because the prefer more the feature of showing free space than showing the filesystem. But I think it's odd that dolphin doesn't do it by default.

Why not adding it to the dolphin as OPTION to show filesystem used?

And why are you so against showing the filesystem used? Why would we just delete the commands from the linux bin folders that show the filesystems used? If it's not that important.

Maybe it'll be a little off-topic, too, but...

Currently, Dolphin shows rwxrwxrwx-based permissions in every file or folder's properties on any filesystem, including NTFS. As far as I know, this is not very useful in case of NTFS. I think, the Permissions tab should be different for different filesystems.

So, a little caption is suitable there: «The filesystem here is %filesystemname%, that's why you are seeing this kind of permissions...»

Showing filesystem will allow Dolphin customize dialogs and explain user why the dialogs are different.

That's basically your unsuccessful attempt to use reductio ad absurdum. What I am proposing is hiding information from users who don't need them. What you are proposing here is making system unusable for everyone - both newbies and experts.

jkorpi wrote:And why are you so against showing the filesystem used? Why would we just delete the commands from the linux bin folders that show the filesystems used? If it's not that important.

Please, read my posts before answering them. OK?
I have never said that this information is not important. I only say that this information is useful only for certain kind of users. And these users know how to access this information. So, from my point of view, adding this information to GUI will serve no real purpose. But I might be missing something.

I will repeat this again: I am asking about user-cases that would justify this change. They are required by KDE Brainstorming FAQs, which you obviously didn't bother to read. You just repeat "this is needed" over and over. But you have failed to tell why this is needed.

Re: Dolphin -show filesystems

Here's a plausible use case:

Alice, a linux user, gives Bob a flash drive with several documents on it for him to copy. Bob, an uninformed non-linux user, reports back that he can't see any files on the flash drive and further that his computer wants to format the flash drive. Alice wonders if the flash drive is formatted with an ext file system. So, she plugs it into her computer, and opens up Dolphin where it appears on the side panel. Finding no way to figure out what file system the flash drive is using, she becomes dejected in life and considers abandoning linux altogether.

Save Alice from her fate. Support this idea.
