[Konsole, KWallet] ssh-agent

Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:17 am
Hi all,

WARNING!
First, as it does not seem clear to everyone on the forum:

IF YOU'D WRITE A COMMENT INSTEAD OF JUST VOTING DOWN, THAT'D BE GREAT

That being said, I can continue :)

So I just met ssh-agent and... wow surprisingly powerfull and usefull! But there is a major problem with it: it is limited to one single Konsole... I then read something about the agent being shared among all terminals, using the "env" or whatever...

How about enabling it in KDE's startup applications, open a KDE dialog box when the private key's passphrase is needed (either when first connecting to some server using 'ssh -A ...' or at startup, depending on user's preferences) and perhas even integrate it with KWallet? It would be IMO much easier and much more convenient than having to make sure it is shared among my different terminals by myself...

It should also be possible to only choose certain keys to give the agent
E.g. I've got key1, key2, key3; key1 & key2 have a passphrase but I use key1 much more often and key3 is a super top security key that must absolutely be kept secure:
  • I can choose to have key1 loaded at KDE startup and either store the passphrase in KWallet, which will take care of unlocking it and giving it to the agent, or open a popup box asking for key1's passphrase;
  • I can have key2 loaded only when I first connect to the server needing this key -and then, it will either be stored for the agent's further use or only used within this Konsole session;
  • key3 will never be added to the agent, no matter what.

That's it! Let's make KDE convenient ;)
