It's nice having the option of a clock that can be set by TZ ... but, for those (like myself) who run into issues of not being able to select a zone it would be really cool to be able to simply right-click the clock in the taskbar, select "Set Clock Manually" and it be displayed. As it is that is not possible. I right-click the clock, choose "Adjust date and Time", the control module comes up, I un-click "Set Date and Time Automatically", click apply, give it the password, click ok, it closes... and when I reopen it the analog clock in the control module dialog window shows my system time (/etc/localtime) and lets me set it... but that doesn't show in the taskbar. The taskbar is stuck on UTC and I'm in CST (-6hrs).
See: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=91432&start=15#p296692 Like I said... it's nice that someone went to all of the troubles to make the clock insanely complex but it is making. my. brain. hurt. Also, all of the widgets act the same way. So why does the analog clock in the control module dialog listen to my /etc/localtime but every loadable widget and the taskbar clock does not? There needs to be a hard-coded manual override. In the physical world the watch on my wrist is set manually. It does not notice if I get on a plane and fly half way around the world. I have to manually pull the winder out and twist it until the hands are in the correct position. This does not bother me! I kind of enjoy doing it. There is a bit of satisfaction that comes from doing something the old-fashioned way. I've done this for decades in at least a dozen different time zones. Believe it or not... I've even manually set it and a dozen home wall-clocks and car dashboard clocks... forward or backward for Daylight Savings changes for over 30 years... with 0 complications! Imagine that! It can be done! I am living proof! |

If you set a manual override, KDE itself would have to keep a clock daemon running. It sounds like you have a deeper configuration issue with your system's clock.
