It would be great if Dolphin had a saved sessions feature similar to Kate and other KDE apps (see Kate documentation here: http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/applications/kate/fundamentals-using-sessions.html).
Below are a couple bug reports asking for this same feature, so I'm not alone in wanting this. I think this is a useful idea and it would also give Dolphin greater feature parity with other KDE apps like Kate and Konqueror. Bug 306257 – Add a feature so that we can save and restore a dolphin session https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306257
Bug 246028 – wish for being able to save "sessions" (with multiple tabs) https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=246028

I would love to see this feature as well. I usually have 6 or more tabs open and there is a default set I like to always be able to open fresh. Dolphin frequently crashes in Plasma 5. Also, the Restore previous session option in System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Desktop Session is not working properly yet.

Yes, that's something any file manager should have. Hopefully they will add them soon.

KDE has become very stable, I am currently running Plasma 5.10.1 on Arch. The KDE Desktop Session manager works quite well, I leave Dolphin open and all the tabs come back after boot or reboot. For me, this is no longer a priority. However, it would be nice to have a separate session manager for Dolphin for those who do not like to use the Desktop Session manager or want to be able to save sessions specifically for Dolphin.

What about splitted tabs? |

I hit the thumbs up for the this. In the mean time, you can open Dolphin in a new activity and it will save what you are doing separately within that.

I"m updating the list of requested features slightly:
Add a feature so that we can save and restore a dolphin session by name (similar to Kate) The properties for a Dolphin 'session' should include at least these: - open in the directory you last used - open all previously opened tabs (each to the directory or directories last used) - focus the last focused tab - remember split view settings for each tab - restore expanded or collapsed folder state for each folder in a tab - remember view properties for each tab - remember any selected files/folders - restore exact position of scrollbars To be really advanced, it could be implemented like newer versions of Firefox using a lazy load feature where folders in a tab are not loaded until that tab becomes focused.
Can you provide more details? How much of a Dolphin session will be saved / restored by using an Activity? Are these Dolphin properties saved across reboots? |

When stopping an Activity (including when logging out/shutting down), it will save off the list of running applications (for Activity-aware apps they will save off their states so that); so that then when you start that Activity it will reopen those applications (restoring the states/sessions of any activity-aware apps).
So the deal here is that you can save sessions of e.g. dolphin by moving them to a new Activity, then starting/stopping/switching to/from that activity as needed. That is only a workaround, of course, as proper saved sessions would be more convenient/flexible.
