Hi

Dolphin is superb and I use its 'Split view' feature a fair bit.

I start it up in single view (not split) as that's often all I need for just deleting the odd file etc.. in this mode I have the Dolphin window sized so that the white area where the actual files & folders appear in is square-ish & a nice comfortable size.

When I want to copy from one folder to another I go into 'Split view' mode & end up with two very narrow panes so I end up resizing the Dolphin window so that it's wider and each one of the two side-by-side views is once again a comfortable size. If I then leave split view then the resulting single pane is much too wide and I need to narrow the window down again otherwise I end up with a file manager that's very wide & shallow like a letter box.

If possible it would be nice to have the Dolphin window automatically become a little wider when entering 'Split view' so that both panes were a comfortable width, then narrowing down again when going back to the single pane view.

Obviously it would only do this when the window wasn't maximised or tiled. I often just open two Dolphin windows to avoid the resizing but then the two Dolphin windows each with its own sidebar wastes a lot of screen space & makes it more fiddly switching between the various windows that i've got open & making sure that I've got the right two Dolphin windows. This is hardly essential but it would just be a nice convenience!!!

Agree, this would be a nice improvement.

Yes, only if it's an option: there is no way my F3 key will resize a window without my express authorization ;)

Alternative idea: resize panels

Sat May 03, 2014 4:34 pm
I agree that this problem should have a nice solution.

As an alternative idea, how about if instead of resizing the window, the panels left- and right-hand would either size down or be temporarily disabled?

I like your idea though. Just an additional brainfart from my side :)

It's time to prod some serious buttock! ;)

Because the dual panels doesn't work as expected, I don't use it. When I want to move files between to directories, I launch a new window via Ctrl+N shortcut or new tab with Ctrl+T shortcut.

The F3 is useless as I want to keep small windows what has sidebar and 5 icon rows for files and if I press F3 to split view, I get two rows for both sides. So I lose one row and then I need to scroll more both sides to manage files in unoptimal way or then resize the window.

The Dolphin requires a option for this. Yes, we need a OPTION.
Set the default so that the window size changes about 2/3 larger in horizontal space to direction where is more space when there is less than user definated amount space (for each listing type).

Just so that if user has 5 rows of files in icon mode, pressing F3 resize window so both panels has 5 rows. Or if user has set the minimum of 4, then size is so that both panels has 4 rows instead 5.

Sure the problem is with a new tab and split view modes but something needs to be done for that.

The other default is, remove the split function button from toolbar as it is useless and clear the shortcut for that too. As it is uselful only for minority as it is now and they then want to keep Dolphin window all the time open as dual-manager.
