Hello,

Dolphin is a pleasure to use, both fast and powerful. However, I was really disappointed when I read that the "column view" had been removed two years before I would be tempted to try it ( :D ). I think I understand the rationale behind it, however I have an idea which I think could bring back a bit of the look&feel of Miller columns, without the programming hassle (or so I hope).

The idea would be to show in the path line the path to the last deepest visited folder.

For example:
I am at `/`, it writes "Root";
I go to `etc`, it writes "Root > etc";
I go to `X11`, it writes "Root > etc > X11" (at this point it is the current behavior);
I go back to `etc`, and then it would write "Root > etc > X11"; (this is where the magic should happen!)
I go to `default`, it writes "Root > etc > default".

In other words: whenever we change directory, if the current directory is a parent of the previous directory, display what was written in the path line before the move, just making the current directory bold. Otherwise, write the path to the current directory.

In a dreamworld, we could even hope to have the buttons in the path line, on a long click, show you a dropdown menu of already visited folders in the same parent directory, but that would probably really add some complexity.

Would the basic idea (without the previous paragraph :p) be useful and within what can reasonably be done and maintained?

Thanks,

Yes, that is exactly how Nautilus does it (sans the dropdown menu). It's super comfy. Not only that, but those path buttons are actually such that they react to drag&drop operations just like folders. Extremely handy.

This is what it looks like: http://a.pomf.se/fuwxge.png
