Something for the old folks.

Mon Aug 04, 2014 6:12 pm
I am still kicking and have outlived both my parents by many years. I expect my children and grandchildren to outlive me as well.

At 71 years, even my corrective lenses do not manage the small font sizes applied to many default applications. With the advent of the larger screens, it would seem possible to have minimum default font sizes increased.

As we get older, we are inclined to have our windows washed more often, and whenever possible, increase font sizes in the places where we can. As life expectency increases, a greater portion of our society may be like me, in need of special consideration regarding size. Even the Smilies are too small. It is difficult to see the differences in the images. I for one, like to use them. They reflect my attitude and pass that on without words. 12 is my minimum anymore, if I want to be comfortable when I read and not strained.

Thanks for the listen ;D

This is not an issue just for older people, but a bigger default font – at least as an optional preset – would be great for everyone who is working a lot with (flowing) texts¹.

I’m not going to go into the theory of typography here, as KDE has a lot of people who are more experienced in that area than I am. But it is a fact that with bigger and bigger DPI screens, staying with 10px fonts² is a silly thing to do and more words (data) on the screen at the same time is not necessarily more data at the reach of your hands/brain. There is a reason why most printed books have relatively big letters, spacing and margins.

KDE needs to take into account bigger fonts also when designing applications’ UI, for the sake of general better usability as well as people who have trouble reading smaller fonts.

I’ve sent a link to this thread to the Visual Design Group subforum in the hope that this gets handled on more general level.

1 e.g. I’m a 30 year old lawyer with nearly perfect eyesight.
2 …and I’ve seen and *done* way worse – 6px on a 1400x900 14" screen.

It's time to prod some serious buttock! ;)
