cascading menu clicks

Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:11 pm
Dear KDE Brainstorming Team,

herein, I want to bring in the idea of a slight extension
of the menu items, like the context menu.
It should not be so difficult to implement.

Often, there are several clicks necessary to do an action
like to duplicate something like a file.

Currently it is necessary to make the following activities sequence:
Code: Select all
 rightclick+Copy;
  rightclick+Paste;
  rightclick+Rename;

This is somehow annoying, at least if you have to do it several times.

What about prssing the CTRL key inside a MENU like

Code: Select all
(ctrl+rightclick)+copy+paste

or including a renam at the end.

Code: Select all
 (ctrl+rightclick)+copy+paste+rename

in order to cascade the activities (menu clicks) after the "CTRL" is pressed.
Cascading clicks after the ctrl button is a tiny, but fine innovative issue.

The Menu Events that are "collected"
shall work one after the other
on the currently selected items

There are some other opportunities where"cascading menu clicks"
are a useful issue.
I already asked if SUSE-Linux has interest in this idea, but they did not want the idea.

Is this an interesting Idea for you?

I imagine there isn't much interest because there are likely few possible cascading sequences that make sense, and most all of these sequences can probably be accomplished more efficiently via other means. Most of the time you use the menu to perform one action then move on to something else. If there are cases where you commonly perform two or more menu actions in sequence, then either their already is another way of accomplishing the same functionality or you can switch to using keyboard shortcuts to reduce muscle movement and build muscle memory around the action.

To take your example of copy+paste(+rename), you can just use the keyboard shortcuts: ctrl+C, ctrl+v, F2. Or you can use ctrl+drag+drop to copy the file to the destination (or drag+drop and select to copy from the menu that pops up), then if you need to rename you can just hit F2 and you're done, or if a file with the same name already exists in the destination it will ask you for the new name of the duplicate file, so it already is one action.

If you have more example cascading sequences, we can examine them to see if it is worthwhile to provide the cascade functionality.
