I imagine that this is already planned, however I could not locate information on either Bugs, TechBase or the "KDE Brainstorm" section of these forums, so am making the suggestion anyway.

I would like to suggest that:
  1. the Media Controller plasmoid under Plasma 5 be extended to handle global keyboard shortcuts for the available plasmoid actions (Play/Pause, Previous, Next), configurable using the standard methods.
  2. the Media Controller plasmoid includes an optional setting for the 'default' MPRIS application if none is playing when the shortcuts are invoked.

This would enable e.g. media keys to control the currently playing MPRIS application, rather than being tied to a specific application only. Where no MPRIS application is currently playing and the keys were used, the 'default' one (if set) would be launched and the action sent. In the event that multiple MPRIS applications are playing simultaneously, the keys would control the same application that the buttons in the plasmoid would control (i.e. would follow the plasmoid's current logic). Finally, those who don't want to use these functions would not have to, since it would be both optional and configurable.

So it's clear that I don't know how to search on Bugs ;): KDE#341587 Media Controller doesn't allow to configure global hotkeys, originally raised several months before my post above and equivalent to suggestion #1.

This was implemented in Plasma 5.3; there is now a "Media Controller" component under Keys KCM, which works as expected. Many thanks to all involved for implementing that :) (and my apologies for the redundant suggestion here).

The hotkeys of course do nothing if no MPRIS application is running, so suggestion #2 is still outstanding (though I would understand if that got WONTFIXed).

EDIT 2015-05-10: Just to clarify on the last paragraph above, it isn't clear to me if available MPRIS applications can be reliably determined when they aren't running; if not, #2 is likely impractical for now (and hence, I would understand if it was WONTFIXed).
