Currently, the only way to change the native window tiling setup from the standard two sides and four quadrants in KDE is by scripting and hacking. The only GUI window tiling configuration manager that works in KDE appears to be X-tile, though it has been so badly promoted for KDE that there is not a single search result on this forum.
Here is a summary of the window tiling options for other desktop environments and operating systems: Gnome: The Shellshape and gTile extensions both allow GUI configuration of window tiling Linux Mint: Allows left, right, top and bottom half screen and four quadrant tiling which is better than KDE gTile allows for GUI configuration of window tiling Windows: the old WinSplit Revolution and vendor utilities like AOC Screen+ allow for GUI configuration of window tiling. Put simply, KDE is somewhat behind the rest when it comes to GUI configuration of window tiling. Indeed, it is quite surprising that Gnome has more native options in this respect than KDE, even when the former is constantly riled for removing useful options. I would like to see GUI configuration of window tiling like in ShellShape or X-tile built into KDE, especially important since monitors are growing in size and resolution. |

KDE is wanting some tiling functionality. By that I do not mean making it more like a tiling wm, but an option to arrange its floating windows in tiles more easily. This is my contribution to the suggestion/brainstorming.
I tried the kwin tiling script (https://github.com/faho/kwin-tiling) but it was confusing. The functionality of the script is (I think) to move around a window that will arrange itself into a tile. It does not always work smoothly or as expected. Maybe I didn't get it. Another option is to bind the numpad number keys (with a modifier) to some less-than-a-quarter-of-a-screen arrangement. Not sure how. For my use I have bound xbindkeys to the already useful kwin functions quick-tile-top-left etc. See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183458 for laptop numpad binding problems in kde. So searching I reached this GUI tiling suggestion. I tried X-tile http://www.giuspen.com/x-tile/ and it is very nice (useful). Two functions of X-tile that I use often now are: close multiple windows by selecting them at once, tile multiple windows in a preselected configuration by selecting them at once. I envision kde integration as a present windows effect. After the windows are presented, I select them with my mouse. I can then press a key to make them arrange in a grid. I think the X-tile can be used here. The same could be done for closing. This is already achieved though by present windows with the close button on the windows. For me it is too small, so I still close multiple windows with X-tile. |

Another thought is, if a developer really likes the idea of developing this, then a fancier solution could be found and beyond using x-tile.
I was thinking of a present windows effect and rather than select which windows to be tiled, to move the ones the user wants into corners of a screen or some canvas representing the screen. |
