To me, none of the current placement options are useful. "Smart" placement always places new windows on the first monitor, never on any others. As do all other options, actually. I'm not sure why this was not implemented, as it's the most intuitive placement option in my eyes: your application will start where you last left it.

Sure, I could define a kwin rule for each application separately, but this is tedious and should be provided as a default by kwin.
