Activities: the obvious solution

Sun Aug 16, 2015 11:39 am
Excuse me if I'm posting incorrectly. I rarely post anything to ANY forums. In my experience I either never receive an answer to the question I am asking, or suggestions/ideas offered are attacked without any serious consideration. Also, searching forums is almost always laborious and usually fruitless.

To the point. I have spent countless hours searching and reading about the rationale for ACTIVITIES without ever once coming across what to me is the most obvious solution to the ACTIVITIES vs VIRTUAL DESKTOPS conundrum. The rationale for ACTIVITIES is to organize workflow. VIRTUAL DESKTOPS do this also. In fact, it seems MOST people prefer working with VIRTUAL DESKTOPS because they are easier to navigate.

The problem with ACTIVITIES as I see it is very simple. Every activity is supposed to provide a unique space for specific applications, yet every activity is required to have the SAME NUMBER OF VIRTUAL DESKTOPS. If I create an activity for web browsing, I need one desktop. If I create an activity for editing videos or photos I may need two or three desktops. BUT I CANNOT DO THIS AS ACTIVITIES ARE CURRENTLY STRUCTURED. Either all my ACTIVITIES have ONE desktop, or all of them have TWO or THREE desktops. In the first case ACTIVITIES offers LESS flexibility than VIRTUAL DESKTOPS. In the latter ACTIVITIES create MORE confusion.

Given the rationale for creating ACTIVITIES as a replacement for VIRTUAL DESKTOPS, I just don't see how the NECESSITY of permitting DIFFERENT NUMBERS OF VIRTUAL DESKTOPS per activity has been overlooked. Until this is possible, I see NO advantage to moving to KDE 5. To be more blunt, ACTIVITIES are simply POINTLESS without the ability to configure different numbers of VIRTUAL DESKTOPS for each activity.

PS--I have been using KDE since 1.0 and stopped using my favorite GNU/Linux distro (Redhat) when they moved to GNOME.

Hi, MH,

I’m also an oldbie (probably from 1.x as well), and I love Activities. I fully agree that they are not presented or explained well enough yet.

There are two very good threads about that now on the forums, do check them out. I’m very optimistic about the outcomes :)

Activities is not about virtual desktop(only an placement for windows). Activities are for assembly meta information and files, program usages, windows, contacts, etc.

Yet I do not know how to to be able to have different favorites for my dashboard between my activities "home", "travel" and "work". It should be different. Instead, in my case, my favorites are just erased each time I reboot. I think it is a bug... and then it is shared between all my activities.
