KDE menu

Wed Oct 07, 2015 12:53 am
There one thing that really bothers me about KDE that I hope in the future gets changed is when clicking on the menu button on the far left of the task bar the menu only comes up half way in the screen which for me is too short. There is no height adjustment, only a width adjustment. :( Please offer an adjustment for the height of the menu. Thanks

Hi,

Even if it's not exactly what you are looking for, plasma offer, since it's last release, a new view for the menu named Application Dashboard.

To use it, right click on the Kmenu icon, select alternatives and choose Application Dashboard. It's an alternative view who take all the screen and offer a good view to choose applications.

I don't particularly like any of the Plasma 5 application launchers. Kicker has never been brilliant - but at least it could be resized under KDE 4...

I full admit I have gotten very used to using the Homerun launcher under KDE 4. There is nothing like that under Plasma. The Plasma 5 fullscreen launcher has an annoying layout (see Homerun - tabbed sections that can be layered in a vertical stack). Unlike Homerun there is also not support for folder shortcuts in the Plasma 5 fullscreen launcher... There aren't options to change the layout. I guess this because of the move to using qml applications??!! If I wanted to use Gnome Shell then I would!!

I've started poking about in the Source Code - but I'm no KDE Developer :-)

The Application Dashboard is not alternative. The menu was possible be resized in the KDE4 and that feature was then suddenly removed, that was very terrible usability problem.

I don't know what is going on in the KDE designers minds, but they have been removing crucial KDE spirit elements radically lately. Like suddenly we couldn't anymore set different wallpaper for different virtual desktop -> Trying to get people use Activities = not cool. Before that Kicker lost the smart return in the All Application -list it being on left, and there came a small odd path list upward -> Not good as best would have been that there is always top item staying visible that is clearly "Back". And then comes this that we can't resize Kicker in height -> Limited UHD display to Full HD display size -> Trying to force users to use 150-200% PPI scaling instead native 100% to get the screen space that we pay for!

Try another menu then...

The fine thing about OpenSource projects like KDE is that alternate approaches for many details can exist beside each other.
I never understood why people stick with that standard menu KDE delivers these days. I agree that it is not exactly a jewel in usability and experience. However you don't have to!

Take a look at the "Lancelot" menu Ivan Čukić implemented long ago: https://userbase.kde.org/Lancelot
Besides size adjustment it brings a wealth of other details without appearing cluttered or overly complex.
AFAIK it is only available for KDE4, which is the KDE version most people still use. It might indeed be time to port it to Plasma-5...

I agree there too, I've wanted to be able to expand that too as I feel it's far too small as it is.

@pooky2483 :
And.... did you take a look at "Lancelot", as suggested above?
