In the past, I used special software that analyse which folders take a lot of disk space and visualize their disk usage in a pie chart. Look for example at the following images:

or

Now it turns out that FX File Explorer for Android also has implemented similar functionality:

So I figure that this could be something worth implementing within the File Manager of KDE.

Konqueror has that functionality built in

if you're looking for standalone apps there are filelight and k4dirstat

There's also JDiskReport, with a more traditional graphic approach.
It's freeware (closed source), Java based.

From: http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/.

For Mint (and Ubuntu based systems), there's a package on GetDeb repository, but it's very easy to run the official binary anyway (for other distributions).

+1 from me.

Yes, I know that there are a few good tools. But it would be quite convenient to have it integrated with Dolphin in an elegant fashion like it is integrated with FX File Explorer in Android. That way one can continuously monitor disk usage over time while browsing the files with a sustaining awareness of where the disk space is going to.

These KDE tools look really nice btw (K4DirStat, filelight, and konqueror-plugins => Main WIndow: View » View Mode » File Size View)!

Dolphin displays partition space availability (enable "Show space information" in settings), having the usage display tool embedded in Dolphin vs opening an app seems much work for little benefit (imho). Also you can open K4dirstat from Dolphin by right clicking a folder (or partition)

+1 for this.
Sure there are alternatives but you have to KNOW them (I'm not sure how many users are aware of those other programs), then install them and last configure them. And this is only to show a simple chart.

Simply put, by continuously monitoring disk space allocation inside certain subfolders it might get easier to trace out those disk space hoggers and more efficiently manage/free up disk space whenever it is needed. On another note, it would be pretty nice to be able to immediately give feedback to developers with questions such as; "Why on ¤%&/ does application X need that much disk space in all of a sudden ... !?!"

Also, a feature like this if neatly implemented will really stick out and attract users, as similar functionality is not found in other file managers such as Nautilus, Windows Explorer, Finder etc.

Similar program are on KDE systems for years(before Windows Vista was born), but it was probably part of Konqueror.

We have now two votes up and none votes down.
How do we proceed to implement and this? Or we have to wait some other vote?
