"Clone" action in service menu

Sat Oct 31, 2015 4:43 pm
Btrfs can create a writeable snapshot of file or directory:

Code: Select all
cp --reflink $TARGET_FILE $SNAPSHOT_FILE

It would be great Dolphin context menu having action "Clone" for that operation.

Can you explain your idea.
I know about readable snapshot to bring system to working state, but never heard about writable snapshot. Why we need this idea and explain, please, a goal of this idea.

Btrfs create writable snapshots (clones in ZFS) by default. Snapshot save previous state of file, new blocks writes on free space. So, that action is analogue of fork operation on GitHub)

Ok. So you wrote about Copy On Write. Good Idea!
