I was wondering if this is could be possible and how much practicality would bring, I don't usually use the buttons that much (shortcuts are just fine) but when I do a tend to maximize instead of minimize simply because my only panel is in top :D, and I realize that the symbol becomes meaningless at some degree, even for aesthetics I think it would work, but in all honesty I don't know what other problems would bring, I just think it would be practical that these buttons could follow the task manager and in the case of more than one panel/widget open, then the direction could be chosen by the user... I don't know, may be is a silly idea, but there it is :D

Yes, the minimization should turn to point to the panel (but what panel if you have many? ;)) but maximize icon should be redesigned as the "Up arrow" doesn't tell anything to user who isn't familiar (= intuitive) already with the system = bad design.

The best icons that has ever been there has been the Windows style, a single square to maximize, and then double square to return back to window. Or then have four arrows pointing to corners to tell maximization and then four arrows point to center to inform returning to back.

True, arrows are not intuitive, in the original breeze theme, the maximized window shows a rhombus which clearly identify its own purpose, would be nice to have the other buttons with a graphical square of sorts as you mentioned in either state of the window.
