Hi, at work I have to use a Windows computer with Windows 7 as O.S.
As much as I don't like Windows I must say one feature in the file explorer has caught my eye recently.
When you hover a file listed in the explorer, a preview of it is opened almost as full scale, including scroll capabilities. It's as if you open the file in the associated program: xls in Excel, doc in Word, pdf in Adobe, etc.
This way you don't need to open the file, starting up another program, no you can just view the file (not edit of course) in a nice and simple way.
The preview is shown in the right half of the explorer window.

Could this be an idea to implement in Dolphin as well?
First I thought since Microsoft both makes the explorer and the office programs it would be easy to let one program use code from the other to show the preview, but since it can do this with other types of files as well it must be done in another way.

Thanks.

Seems to work.

Although I'm sure Klook can do a lot, it is not what I am talking about. The file manager in Win 7 shows me from left to right on my screen:
folder tree, files in the selected folder with time and type and furthest right a preview of the file, whether it is doc, xls, pdf, txt, or whatever. This way you can see the contents of a file without having to open the matching program. Scrolling through the file is even possible.
It's not a way to open a file in the matching program, it is just a preview, but one which I use a lot at work. I was thinking since KDE is a DE with all bells and whistles this would be perfect to be implemented.

That sounds to me to what Konqueror was capable of, but I'm not sure. Could you post a screenshot, or a link to some image, of the Windows file manager showing that feature?
You can still see some previews in Dolphin hovering your pointer over the files and folders, but won't be as big as you say (actually it's a frame with the same info you have in the Info panel) nor at the right of Dolphin's window, but on your pointer's position. You need to activate this feature in Dolphin's menu button->Configure Dolphin->General->tab «Behavior»->checkbox «Show popup help» (or something like that. My desktop is in spanish, so I'm translating on the fly and probably the menues in english aren't exactly as I say).
Anyway, some screenshot of what you talk about in Windows, would help.

Dolphin has an Information panel (F11) that will show previews of files, similar to Windows Explorer. It lacks the ability to interact with some of the file types like you describe (you can already play audio files and videos using it, but no interaction for text files or images), which could be handy.

Unfortunately it seems that Klook is abanonware; besides it's a KDE4 app. :-\ A pity, as it seemed a rather nice application.
