I'm pretty certain after reading the arrogant and insulting responses to this suggestion on the forums that this behaviour will never be implemented. However, I think it would be nice if KDE/Dolphin would provide the option to behave like (almost) every other file manager and desktop in existence, that is, to move a file/folder when it is dragged and dropped on the same partition or device, and copy otherwise. The current behaviour, presenting the user with a dialog every time they drag and drop something, puts a lot of people off using KDE.

Not sure if that's a good option. Most of the KDE users in my area like dolphin because it asks you what you want. I myself have had too many moves go bad and loose the files.

Hey, that's great! Keep the current dolphin behaviour by default! Hide the option (once again, in italics) to behave like all the other file managers in the most arcane location you can find in system settings. All I'm asking for is the option (there's those italics again) to be able to do this.

When I have to install a new operating system for someone, I say 'try Linux!' and tell them about it and so forth. Then I show them (amongst others) KDE. Then I show them that they'll have to (very carefully, because the option dialogue isn't exactly the biggest) choose whether to move, copy or make a link every single time they drag and drop a file. Then they say '**** that.' Then I uninstall KDE and show them Gnome and they go 'uuurgh'. And then I show them one of the more simple DE's like xfce or something and they make a sad face and go, 'well...okaaaay, if that's the best thing going'.

I'm typing this now on cinnamon. Sure, it has its problems. But nothing compared to dolphin's drag n' drop.

Please don't suggest I replace dolphin with another filemanager, because this problem effects the desktop folderview too. And everyone I know likes a normal desktop with folders on it.

Oh, before anyone suggests this...guess what, nobody likes holding down modifier keys like ctrl or shift while dragging files either!

I agree. I love a lot about KDE in general and Dophin, but this one example of behaviour is different to most other file managers around across several environments.

Like the topic starter, I would like the *option* to set a default action when I drag and drop in Dolphin.

I don't have a clearly habitual behavior when it comes to moving/copying files, so I like the current behavior. But I understand that many users may have the habit to move or to copy more frequently than the other actions, and having an annoying popup evey time you just want to do what you do the 85% of the times must be a pain in the *ss, so I support your proposal too. I'm afraid that developers don't pay any attention to this forum though :-\ . Perhaps you might prefer to ask for it at https://bugs.kde.org

Yeah, dolphin seems to be doing a 360. Dragging a file to another location then a popup selection on what to do appears is fine. But if you execute the drag with a modifier key (Ctrl or Shift or Ctrl+Shift) then it should be clear that you want to copy, move or link. That's smart.

Unfortunately, that's not what's happening. Now on Plasma 5.8 and that time-saving feature is not back.

I felt like I was the only one who was thinking they were arrogant thanks good it is not only me who think that they are imposing their opinions on everyone (instead of just adding the option to please each one with a customization setting)...

I am pretty certain that I cannot spot a single response here that is arrogant or insulting.
