KDE 5.x: a Study in Frustration

Thu Nov 17, 2016 1:41 pm
I am a KDE user from wayyyy back... like KDE 3.x early version. I LOVE KDE. *use* to use Fedora, until Fedora switched to KDE 5.x . KDE 5.x has been out for quite a while, yet it is just as klunky as the day it was released:

1) I *still* can't assign individual wallpapers to my various virtual desktops, I get *ONE* :'( Wallpaper that is copied to *ALL* my VD. This is not a problem in KDE 4.x
2) I *still * can't group *specific* icons in a particular VD. A a particular "Widget" to *ONE* VD, it is copied to *ALL* VD. This is again not a problem in KDE 4.x
3) To customize each VD in KDE 4.x I go to the page that allow me to ADD VD, and there is a little check box that says: "Different Widgets for Each Desktop ". This should NOT be a BIG problem for your coders, and allows users to Configure KDE 5.x the way *THEY* want to us it. Users should not be herded into ONE style.
4. By this point in the KDE 4.x release cycle there were a few HOW TO Videos all ready released, that told users HOW TO configure KDE 4.x to the way *they* use it. So far the is not so much as a single YouTube video that tells you HOW TO Configure KDE 5.x

There is no reason that with minor tweaks you could not accommodate any user by making it an EASIER GUI to use while at the same time allowing skill set developed by KDE 4.x users to be wasted. You are also at a stage -- or should be -- to release a HOW TO YouTube video to start walking people through the various feature sets in 5.x. Given my drathers right now and having developed a set of procedures that allow me to group various of related "widgets" on a single VD seems natural, I simply switch to that VD, I REFUSE to use an inferior GUI that uses a single Wallpaper across multiple VD, and the same set of widgets across all the VD. In short KDE 5.x SO FAR seems to be a step BACKWARDS. I hope you will add minor tweaks and clean it up. I also hope you will release a YouTube video soon, as I look forward to kicking the tires, but what I have seen so far leaves me unimpressed.

Solution is very simple. Use activities instead of Virtual Desktops and use new Activities Switcher.
