I know that Plasma Netbook was dropped with Plasma 5, but I was thinking about this for a while.
What about bringing it back as a desktop targeted toward tablets/2-in-1 devices, say 12" and smaller? The main thing that would be needed would be an on-screen keyboard, which On-Screen already covers quite well in Gnome and I don't see why it couldn't work with Plasma Netbook. Touch input would have to be fine tuned, including palm rejection, but that is already being done. I know about Plasma Mobile for phones, but do we really need to reinvent the wheel AGAIN like Canoncial has tried with Unity-whatever-version, for tablets and 2-in-1's when the existing code this is available just needs refining tuning? WIth some tuning, Plasma Netbook would work great I think. I have tried an older distro that had Plasma Netbook, on my little 8" WIndows tablet, booting from a USB drive. That version of Plasma Netbook worked pretty well for it's age. WIth Wayland in use now, I think it could really become a great desktop for 12" and smaller touch screens on x86-based tablets and 2-in-1 devices. |
