Heyho folks,
(note: I use the German Version of KDE so if I use any wrong terms, sorry!) I am using KDE for more than 10 years now and I've never had problems with customizing my desktop – UNTIL NOW... Not long ago I switched from Kubuntu 14.x to Kubuntu 16.04, which comes with Plasma 5. My KDE-Plasma-version: 5.8.5 I have my desktop-layout set to Folder-View. Unfortunately, Plasma 5 can't do certain things in Folder-View, Plasma 4 COULD do and what are, in my opinion, things it SHOULD BE ABLE to do! So I have a wish and I am not alone, as post like these two show: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358990 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349721 But I see that this is no bug but simply that options were forgotten in Plasma 5! What you CAN do: In Folder-View you have the options to align the icons in columns or in rows. The only further options you get, are to have them on the left or the right side, and you can leave them unsorted or have them sorted by name, size, type and date. They align themselves to a grid and there is no option to change this, so you could move them freely about and they would stay there. So, as Al stated correctly in 2015(!!!): "we can no longer customize where the icons are located in a folder view"! Why the hell is that?!?! I use my desktop as I use my desk. Much like Alurélien Murith in June 2016 said: "The fact is, some people like me like to use their computer's desktop as they would use their office's desk : grouping things, putting lots of folders/files close one to another and arranging them in a harmonious way." Like Aurélien, I want to put the icons on my desktop wherever I want – and I want them to STAY THERE! (I CAN move my files and folders on the desktop freely about along the grid, no problem with that. But whenever I re-boot the system, they align themselves again along "column or row", "left or right", even if choose "lock position". What the f***k!... as you might guess, this really is annoying me.) So my wish: Folder-View in Plasma 5 SHOULD have these abilities: - third option in "alignment": 1.columns, 2. rows and 3. NONE! → 1.left, 2.right and 3."CUSTOMIZED" or whatever... - alignment to grid should be optional! It all worked under Plasma 4 and in all the versions before just fine, and I really don't understand why this hasn't been fixed in these past 2 years since Plasma 5 came up. Please guys, fix this soon!! Greez nika |

Hi Nikas,
With plasma-desktop-5.20.4-4.mga8 5/1/21, I have the same issue with icon placement while using the Desktop layout of KDE, my preference since mid-2000. The icon arrangement choices are limited as you describe for Folder view and I want to put icons as I wish, as I used to. Yes, to all "calendar guys", I am aware. I've spent enough time searching in vain and this thread represents my dissatisfaction adequately. I'm not qualified to judge the actions of devels but, having contributed money to FOSS for 21 years (maybe not enough), I expect my feedback about the utility of the products to be taken into account. |
