This idea is quite similar to this: viewtopic.php?f=83&t=140899
Main difference is about to allow user to use custom hiding algorithm instead of custom sort algorithm. Use case is quite simple: 1) I have audio book for learning English on CD. This audio book contains wav or mp3/mp4 files and hiding algorithm for Beginners, etc. I can select algorithm, which shows only records of speaking for beginners and so long. 2) Some people are using GoboLinux, so they could select to hide files contains some attributes instead of beginning with dot Of course, due to security reasons, user must accept default hiding algorithm before Dolphin use it. You can also connect this idea with idea about custom sorting older, but I prefer to have two different mechanism.

Can't one achieve the same result using search and regex ?

First point can be achieved by directories (one for beginiers, second for pre-indermediate, etc.).
Second point cannot be achieved by any other way. Another way to use is user hiding algorithm to show only executables. Executables has no extensions, only set x bit of rights.
