Currently removable devices are not mounted automatically by default. This behaviour is different to what many other OS do. Example: Ubuntu, Windows.

At least the option to automount devices that have been mounted before should be the default behaviour in my opinion.

Plasma should provide notifications of the newly-inserted device with actions for what you want to do with the new device. Selecting such options should ensure the device is mounted if it wasn't when the device was inserted.

Care to provide details of your system (kde version, Distro version) and what behavior you are currently observing and how that differs from what you expect?

I am using Ubuntu 17.04 and installed kubuntu-desktop afterwards.

Plasma version is 5.9.5.

I am using two external hard-drives which are always connected. I guess, Plasma only asks, what to do when a device is connected while running and thus I don't get any notification.

I believe devices that are connected when the system starts should also be listed in the Device Notifier in the System Tray and/or the Places panel in Dolphin.

Auto-mounting of devices on system startup is out of scope for KDE/Plasma, which only manages what happens after you've logged in. You could try proposing this to the Ubuntu community though.

As for setting it up yourself, a little googling brings up https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Autom ... Partitions

Yes, these devices are listed, but not mounted by default. There is a setting for this in the system settings, though (so I don't think this is out of scope for Plasma as you wrote). I proposed to make this setting default.

Going back and checking, I see now the Removable Devices module in System Settings, so I take back what I mentioned before.
