Smart KDE Application Management

Fri Mar 30, 2018 5:57 am
I had an idea for a system that keeps track of the capability of KDE programs. Each application is given a value in a number of categories, like file management, text editing, image viewing, etc. This can be used for things like:
  • An activity generator that is given values in those areas and creates a list of programs
  • An application launcher with sliders

Well, conveniently application launchers do already come with categories. You can see them in the Categories entry of their .desktop file (system-installed apps: /usr/share/applications or /usr/local/share/applications, user-installed apps: ~/.local/share/applications).
There are a number of category-based application launchers which use those to determine how to present the applications, especially the menu-based launchers (when using the default menu configuration).
If none of these launchers matches your desires, feel free to find and modify one which is close to what you want or propose your idea here to find someone willing to help you implement your idea.

For the activity generator, that also sounds easy enough to do with a little scripting by someone who is familiar with activity templates. Seems interesting to do this with by default, and in fact reminds me of the default setup of the Full-Monty edition of PCLinuxOS, which had 6 desktops/activities with different folder views for different sets of applications on each desktop based (loosely) on categories (that version is now discontinued, but good descriptions at http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/O ... 8418.shtml and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwP_F3bqTIs).
