Dolphin View Modes

Mon Apr 08, 2019 8:55 pm
I love Dolphin but I’m having problems configuring it the way I like
I want to have 2 configurations at the same time but it seems they are incompatible, and I think they shouldn’t be.

I want to set the default view mode, for example, Compact. This should be easier or more natural.
At the same time I want to see the Type field by default when I select the view mode Details. It seems you can do this ONLY if the default view mode is Details and I want to keep Compact as my default view mode.

Greetings!

Umm... have you tried enabling Additional Information either from menu View or toolbar Control?

Yes, I have. It's easy to add Type to the current columns. What I want is not to have to add it every time I visit a new directory.
It's also easy to set all the fields you want to see in every new directory you visit but that works only if your default View mode is Details.
My default view mode is Compact.

It doesn't matter what the view setting might be... Dolphin keeps whatever options you may tweak and configure, so when you restart... voilà.
(At least that is true for Plasma 5... my version is 5.15.4)

Yes, I know.
When I go back to a directory it has the same configuration I selected the last time. That's good.
But I'm talking about directories I have never visited or configured.

Go to Adjust View Properties.... There select the viewing style you want including the file type Additional Information. Then apply them to All folders and check Use these view properties as default.

I tried that but it's not exactly what I want because then the default view would be Details.
I want it to be Compact.
With your solution I would solve one of the two things I want.
I have tried many things and I guess those 2 things are incompatible. They shouldn't but they are.
Thank you for your answer.

I want it to be Compact.

But you can set the view mode to Compact there and add the file Type to always show under Additional Information and then apply it as default. I am sorry if I am still misunderstanding. To me it seems what you want is possible there. I just tried myself and set the settings to what I understand you want and it works.

There are two problems ... my English is not as good as it should and my knowledge about Linux is also bad. I'm trying to improve in both cases.

I didn't know I could add Additional Information to the Compact view mode. Very interesting.

I want to use Compact as my default view mode seeing only the Name field.
And then ... every time I click on the button Details I want to see the fields Size, Modified and Type.

The default fields of the Details mode are only Size and Modified. I want to add Type but at the same time having Compact as my default view mode.
I have tried a lot of things but I don't know how to do it.

Greetings and thanks again for all your answers.

In my humble opinion there should be:

In Dolphin preferences > General > Behavior
an option to choose your default view mode.

In Dolphin preferences > View Modes > Icons & Compact & Details
all the options there are in the window View Properties.

I think that would be much better.

Just my opinion!

Ah, alright. Now I understand the problem. Yes, that doesn't seem to be possible at the moment.

I think it's fine having that in Adjust view properties but that's probably just preference.

I agree. That could be really useful.

Happy Easter!
