I want to create special rules for applications and windows depending on the connected monitors and or the number of active displays.
Scenario: - At work I put my laptop into a docking station that is connected to two monitors and I therefore I have three active displays. - When I am in the dock I want some applications to be automatically placed on one of the monitors and all virtual displays. (Alarm views, email, chat etc) - When I unplug my laptop and therefore only have on active display I would like to change the rule and have the applications on one virtual desktop. - If possible I would love for it to be both generic and specific, as in create rules that depend on a special monitor or rules that depend on number of active displays. The scenario above only covers situations or events related to monitors and active displays, but this idea is not limited to only these kind of situations. Possible solutions: - Allow people to create small flow or action based rules in the settings aka scenarios that triggers on certain events. - Allow certain rules to be started with special commands so I can create scripts that trigger them - Allow keyboard mappings to trigger specific rule(s). I believe dynamic rules for applications and windows would be a very powerful mechanism that would allow users and administrators to utilize the abilities of our window manager without the need for scripting or developer skills. At least it would make my work day much smoother and make me hesitate less before removing my laptop from the docking station. |
