While reading about the PineTime, it seemed to me that this could be a good fit for KDE Connect.

I'm not sure what the current plans are for KDE Connect when it comes to smartwatches, but this could be a a good way to try it out. A benefit of using KDE Connect would be that the smartwatch could connect to both your phone and laptop or desktop. Even if KDE Connect is just used for sharing notifications among these devices, this might already be pretty useful. Especially since smartwatches are usually considered to be paired only with a smartphone, not with multiple devices.

This might also be helpful in seeing to what extent the current code and technical design of KDE Connect are suitable for use on smartwatches. Full disclosure, I'm not affiliated with Pine64 at all, I use KDE Connect on my phone and pc and I do not own a smartwatch. I just thought this might be interesting to others so I just wanted to share this idea.

For what it's worth, I'm going to second the motion. I think that KDE could have a wonderful interface for a watch. Possibly Plasma Mobile could be forked to a smartwatch?

In the Pine64 April Update, they mention that they are now actively looking for a companion app for PineTime. This may be a good time to contact them about this.

From the post:
Last month I reported on PineTime development in which I focused on JF’s incredible work. We currently feel that this firmware stands the best chance of becoming the first to ship with an end-user PineTime production-run later this year or early in 2021. Since last month’s update we saw another major milestone in PineTime development, namely BLE notification support. This effectively turns the PineTime from a ‘dumb’ watch capable of syncing with an Android or Linux phone, into an actual smartwatch capable of displaying notifications on your wrist.

However, for this functionality to actually work we need a companion app for the PinePhone and Android. I’ll be reaching out to relevant people whom I know of, asking if they’d be willing to work together with JF and other PineTime developers on porting an app to mobile operating systems. But consider this a ‘call for development’ – perhaps you’re interested in taking on the challenge? If yes, please reach out to me or JF and have a chat about what you’ve got in mind.
