I'm a junior programmer and in my free time i program little videogames.
AFAIK the file types of Krita and other popular drawing/painting software are serialized (what means GIT doesn't like it very much, and manage them replacing the whole files instead of doing the necessary modifications).
As long as Krita is widely used to produce material for software projects (like banners, backgrounds, game assets, etc) i feel it a good idea to make Krita be somehow compatible with GIT.
I don't know very well how to implement this, but this could be a nice feature.
Title says "save workaround" because there is probably no solution thinking about a single file for each project, and it's better to think in a set of files instead. Maybe it is better to separate project metadata in its own files, save each layer in its own files, and so on...
I know is heavy stuff, but in some way it is an opportunity to encourage into a feature that have never been considered before in this type of software.
