Krita: Real world Air-brush

Mon Aug 03, 2020 7:50 pm
I have never seen a true representation of an airbrush in a painting app. Most tools follow the paradigm of more pressure = increased width and darkness. Airbrushes are the opposite. It's the one tool that never makes contact. It's a projected cone that gets smaller and sharper the closer you get. I'm not sure how to solve the problem (IMO) just yet, hopefully there will be some dialog on the subject.

IE. the way a taper is created airbrushing is a sort of 'dive bomb' motion, wide and diffuse from a distance to sharp and dark, from moving closer.

I was playing with the curves for tablet use and was able to come close but the problem is reversing the pressure means a mirror effect/bookend occurs when releasing.

(Is there a way to attach an image from my computer, or only add a link?)

Following up. As a spray, air-brushes make marks by projecting pigment onto a surface. There is no contact/pressure to speak of, regarding the tool and canvas. It deals with proximity, air flow(typically binarie, on or off) and pigment concentration. The air brush also has the ability to keep moving, with air flow, but cease marking.

I guess it could go either way, in terms of applying the effect to a stylus but it would still be different from other tools. Pressing hard (or soft) the mark would wide and soft changing to narrow and dark. Like a real airbrush would. The physical action of moving near or far from the canvas can’t be applied in a pressure paradigm.
