Currently, when you do a search and replace in all files in a directory ("in Folder") in Kate, the replacements are not immediately made in the files on disk. Rather, the replace operation creates a temp file for each file where a replacement occurred, and opens all these files. There is no visual indication or prompt that you still need to save all these changed files by doing "Save All" from the File menu. You may also exit Kate, at which point a "Save Documents" popup appears that lets you save all modified documents with one confirmation click.
On the other hand, when you right-click on the tab of, say, your first file, you can "close other documents", you are then required to confirm each save operation manually, which is impractical if you are dealing with a large number of files. This opening of many files after replacement can cause stability issues - with a few thousand files, Kate often just crashes when you try to save, the original files remain unmodified, and the temporary kate-swp files remain on the disk. Search and Replace in all files in a folder should not open the files, but modify them directly on the disk. When you "close other documents" and there is a large number of documents, the same popup should happen as when you exit with a large number of open and modified files, letting you save all with one click. |
