My KDE 6 wish list

Sat Sep 11, 2021 7:18 am
I love KDE and actually prefer it to other desktop environments, but it feels unpolished sometimes.

So here is my KDE 6 wish list:
1- Simplify theming: KDE theming is really compilcated with multiple themes for decorations, items, desktop ... etc. I would really prefer to include a CSS based theming system for the entire desktop (minus the display manager of course) with class based system for special items, based on QT CSS styling system.
2- Reduced set of features: KDE includes a very huge amount of features that it seams overwhelming, I would rather a bare minimum set of highly polished features at launched, with old features coming back, and new features being introduced in the periodic updates.
3- For the love of god fix the problem with KWin rounded corners and the Blur effect
4- Better PIM software, currently the KDE PIM software (Kontact) is next to useless, I require the standard akonadi login for mail and calendar as well as the newer online account for drive, despite giving it the full access to my google account, follow GNOME style and pick up single interface for online account and stick with it.
5- This is for designers who create themes for KDE, please create something with solid background instead of transparent and translucent

That is true, but then again that is KDE. KDE has always delivered a feature packed software suite.
If you don't like that then maybe you are simply better of using another environment. Like Gnome.

Could you please elaborate on this?
I use the KDE pim suite on a daily base for all private requirements, I also have used it in business environments. While it certainly could use some polishing it does work and I prefer some of the features and approaches it offers over other solutions. So I dare say that it certainly is _not_ "next to useless".

You do realize I said at launch, I am not talking about removing features, this is not GNOME :D :D , I am talking about reordering the development process to ensure a highly polished software suite at every point release.

Kontact really fails when it comes to Google services, why I do have to register my google account twice, once with akonadi for KDE PIM, and once with Online Accounts for GDrive, and in the second case I grant ALL access (so to speak) to my account (email, files, calendar,...etc).

Also because I live in Syria, the Arabic locale prevents me from entering time when creating events in the calendar app.

If GNOME has something right, it is the fact all its PIM software (be it Evolution, Geary or any other) have the same backend, Evolution data server.

I would really love for KDE to merge akonadi with Online Accounts, in order to have a unified backend.

Kontact is a PIM, it don't deals with drives or disk space in the cloud. That's why you need second/another account for accessing GDrive. And accessing GDrive is also not a job of Kontakt but more for Dolphin. These are two different worlds that have nothing to do with each other.

KDE theme is big more then you can do with CSS. It contains some desktop elements for window switching, login/-out/lock screens, on screen displays, icons, ... But i think if you dive into this subject, you may invent something new and simplified ...

I do not share this opinion. I use is private and in office. I admit it is not perfect but it does it's job good enough.

There is actually 677 KDE themes in KDE Store. I'm sure you find one that you like :) If not - create your own.

I am a very good programmer and a good UI designer, but when it comes to color selection, even though I now how to do it, I am really bad at it :D :D

Also most modern themes have some translucency or transparency effect, WHY ?!?!?!?!?!

I think about solution for too many options.

Add parser for settings, which will generate screenshot. User go to system settings, type (for example): changing wallpaper. Systemsettings 5 will parse current desktop settings and generate image for it. It also show matching changes of settings. User select (for example) changing wallpaper. System settings 5 will apply new settings from uploaded by another user file (connected with selected changes by user) on virtual settings and generate screenshots from it. User will click show me how, so systemsettings will open related KCM and highlight settings user may change. Creator of changesets could also add additional materials, like descriptions, movies, etc.

For example:
1. I am changeset creator. I connect my changeset with Display Settings/Monitor. I select resolution dropdown and apply button as related (it will be highlighted later). I name it "change resolution". Next I select to apply some set of resolution in my changeset (different version of changeset).
2. User A would change resolution, so open systemsettings 5, type changing resolution, systemsettings 5 send request to network and return search.
3. User select my changeset, see all previews of new settings (images of he/she desktop with different size).
4. He/She select apply
5. Systemsettings open related KCM, highlight resolution dropdown and apply button
6. User known, what to do.

We will have similar mechanism, like highlighting changed settings. Difference is we will highlight settings user probably would like to change. Because we display new settings, user may guess it is related. User could even not known English - User will only see images and KCM probably will be translated.
