Problem
KDE File manager has a not so optimal way of handling storage, with a separate 'devices' and 'removeable device's' also having multiple drives show up in the cramped bottom left of file manager is not so UI friendly especially if you have a multiple SSD/HDD/USB. Solution KDE File manager already has a superior method built in, copy how the remote section works were you select network, it lists all network servers and you can then add to places whichever you like. Remote Network My network share (user added) So copy the above Storage Devices My storage drive (user added) This would be a much neater solution as KDE File manager would only show the drives you want by selecting add to places and if you need to browse all storage you simply select devices which also gives a larger UI to work with if you have multiple storage devices. |

Is having people needing to hide/remove unwanted items a possibly more widely useful option then requiring people to unhide/add places.
Having the devices sections become collapsible might be a more useful option than having to dive into a folder window to view them.

My suggestion was to push for low hanging fruit in that KDE already does this with network shares it could do with it storage devices. Having a collapsible system could also work too. As someone who works with a lot of drives coming from windows the drives all located in the bottom left hand side of the KDE File Manger UI is just not good, its okay for 1-2 drives but anything more its looks very messy. In contrast Windows Explorer has storage in the mid range field of Explorer column but in KDE the network section is there for some reason. Definitely KDE needs something like Storage/Devices equivalent to Windows This PC. |
