Take a look at the top of each panel in the Dolphin mockup below:
You might notice an additional icon at the top of each panel that is not present in Dolphin right now, a thin line. This button allows you to temporarily collapse a panel. The folder view here (in the lower left-hand corner) is collapsed to keep it out of the way. The line (actually a minus) then becomes a plus, if you click the plus it returns to its previous size. This is part of my series of Dolphin ideas

I don't know if Qt allows this, if it is possible... I don't think they do, the only thing they support that is similar, would be what is seen in Kate, that collapsable titlebar thing on the left side and such...
