I've recently started to place the panel vertically orientated to the left side of my widescreen display so that I get maximum vertical space for app windows. It's the wave of the future people! :)

I like the fact that the buttons for the running apps in the panel become square but the icons remain small with just a few letters of text showing.

See the top-left portion of the screenshot:

This post is to request better/cleaner UI for panel placed to the side of the screen rather than the default location of at the bottom. To make the icons fill up the square portion of the running app buttons...

I would like to have it also on left edge of the screen but I don't like the behaviour at all :-(

Maybe you need to put (only) your taskbar in another horizontal panel. Developers can't do miracles with text orientation :)

Thats the thing, since the app icons are now square instead of long when panel is vertical to the left, the panel should only display large icons and no text :)

You can use STasks (kde-look seems to be down at the moment?) to only show the icons. But yeah, I'd also like it to be integrated with the default Task Manager plasmoid. :)

Edit: Screenshot of it in action

OK I'm actually going to try building kdebase-workspace from source after modifying the following file to try to get large icon and no text in a vertical panel :)

http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase ... iew=markup

I'm running kubuntu 9.04 beta with KDE 4.2.2

Yes, somewhat! Edited this file: websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/plasma/applets/tasks/abstracttaskitem.cpp

In the iconRect() function simply commented out the line which was setting icon size to one-third. In the drawTextLayout() simply returned without doing anything.

See the small icons before:

Now see the large icons:

Some apps still show small icons like VLC and OpenOffice, but I'm hoping KDE moderators/developers will consider this UI idea :-)
