Probably, the only thing, why I don't use KMail is the inability to set the_only_right_mode_of_storing_messages_on_server. Thunderbird has it. It is: leave messages on server until I delete them from my local inbox folder.

It sounds interesting, but could you explain this in detail? I can imagine several possible ways this would work. Also, what is the intended workflow?

Okay, I'll try. English is not my native language, so ask more questions if the explanation is ambigous. Most of us have at least 2 computers: at work and at home. I set up my mail clients on both computers to fetch messages from the same mailboxes (except the work mailbox, which I'm not intrested in, while at home ). Imagine, I get all my mail on the office computer - the mail client gets it and removes those messages from server(s). Okay I'm aware of new messages, but want to reply to some of them later, at home. But at home I won' get those, because the messages were removed from the server(s) by my mail client at office computer. I can set up the mail client not to remove fetched messages from server. Okay, now I'm able to get messages multiple times. But the mailbox is going to be full eventually. I can use web interface to log into my mailbox and clean it, but that's inconvenient and needs additional time. With proposed feature available the mail client leaves fetched messages on server while they stay in local Incoming folder. This way I can get the same messages on many computers (what I actually want) and keep the server's mailbox clean by removing unneeded messages. When I delete the message from Incoming folder the client tells the server to delete it too.

You should be able to do this by using Disconnected IMAP. It would allow you to have the very same data on the mail server and all your computers. Deleting or moving a message from the synchronized folders will delete the message from the mail server and all other computers on the next sync operation.

And what about those servers, that don't provide access through IMAP? |
