This is the appeareace of the same feature in KDE and OSX. You can see that there is a great difference, among OSX version is animated.
Note: Not requesting same appearence as OSX version. I think that could look great but maybe somebody finds a better way to do it. OSX Stack KDE FolderView

Hi,
I am on Mac OS X every day (KDE is my virtual OS), so I disagree with you. The stacks look like more eyecandy but we cannot have more than 9 elements into, In addition to that, the OS X's stacks are not easy to use for little resolution whereas KDE's are. To speak about the "9" limitation we can extend, the problem is the angle is not too high and we risk to overflow the screen. If we spoke about Stacks, I prefer the old manner to manage folder in OS X : You could access to submenus with a right-clic and you cannot do anymore by default. Your screenshot shows exactly what I mean. florentg |

@florentg I think we can do both. Chaning icon size, separation between icons and angle we can have more icons than before. Wouldn't you like it to be animated and a little bit more stylished?
Just use imagination. We have many ways to do this without 9 elements limitation. For example small icons and two columns.

I am so sorry if I allways disagree with you but I think discussion build better concept.
First of all, I agree, we can change the system but I don't know how, that's why I prefer to stay with the actual system. I disagree with changing size of icons because of the low resolution. With several elements, it would be too little to see. Two columns, why not (as GnuStep menu ?) but it can be complicated for newbie (in this case, let the choice to user in the plasmoid preference) To conclude, I shall say this sytem is beautiful now. It's not a Konsole. N.B. : Suggestion : Add a "Delete-Option" to the contextual menu in this plasmoid. We can do some things directly in the plasmoid (choose the program to open by example) but not delete and we have to open Dolphin for that. |

Yeah, it's great this is a forum not just a voting system so we can discuss.
FolderView plasmoid has currently an option to change icon size. If users wants more elements can change size, if user wants bigger ones because of resolution can do it. It's just like now, just a little bit more stylish.
That would be only if there are too many elements. Possible solutions to this are: 1. Scrolling. That's current. If community likes this better, ok. 2. Multiple columns 3. Show a grid

So, ok for a stylish version but what do you propose ? Currently if we could change (and it could, I discovered the folder view option) the size of icon, what can be improve ? Is it a kind of Core Animation you want to be created ?
I have to acknowledge I have no idea about the final result of what you imagine. Have you the project to create a Mockup ? I believe the "icon view" is a kind of the grid you mention. Or do you prefer a OS X's grid ? (Personnaly I prefer scrolling). |

Well, I think there are three kind of improvements in appearence: 1. Animation. Currently seems to do a fadein/fadeout effect. Specially if there are many elements that feels too much like a regular window, boring. A progressive appearence of elements would be more spectacular, like this. 2. No background. Currently has the same background as any other plasmoid. With less background that would be more beautiful. Both OSX and Cairo dock have removed background leaving different kinds of border to allow reading the text. Not sure of what should be the KDE way. 3. Curved style. Mac OS and Cairo dock do this way, KDE version could be curved or not. Well, that's a division of appearance improvements. Just changing point number 1 would let FolderView being less boring/bland.

I think didn't mention here "icon view". I have mentioned it in other threads in this forum because some requests could be done with a FolderView like the QuickLaunch one but people draw it as some kind of grid. Like you I personally prefer scrolling but there are MAYBE other kind of view that people would like to see. I remember that before existing iconified version of FolderView there was a "QuickAccess" plasmoid in kde-apps.org that had support for multiple kind of views.

I saw your idea in the topic "Quick Launch". Your solution is great.
I don't know QuickAccess but I can quote another solution : Just as Dolphin, we have the view in list with arrows (as Finder) you can unfold and fold up. But I am sure here we won't reinvent the wheel.I saw your idea in the topic "Quick Launch". Your solution is great. Do you imagine to put a picture in Background. I suggest like this but I am not be able to take a better picture because I don't have enough RAM to use Krita. Just imagine the tiger in the Background. The picture doesn't seem to be visible...

These are all good points. May I suggest editing them into your original post for better clarification?
Yes, it could be animated more impressively, though it should preferably have an option to adjust the speed of the animation as well as the option to simply turn it off (i.e. for those people with older hardware or prefer a more spartan OS)
Absolutely.
This seems to be a more subjective preference, so it's good you're suggesting it as an option. As florentg pointed out, however, there are issues with space utilization, in response to which you suggested 3 possibilities, to which I'm going to add a fourth. The principle problem with OSX's method is that it curves to the edge of the screen, which means lists longer than 9 items must either be scrolled into view from offscreen (like the current Folder View plasmoid, though it can handle more items) or layered, onion-style, in a pie pattern. The first is possible, but conveys less information than it might, while the second could be useful for a stylus or touchpad but is far less intuitive, particularly if one is interested in maintaining the ability to easily scroll in a sensible manner. What do we have at present? An OSX model that's pretty, but less efficient, and a Folder View model that conveys more information, but considerably less attractively. So how do we incorporate OSX's design style without impairing usability? Simple: Curve the list in the other direction. Instead of running out of room at the edge of the screen, curve it into the centre, where the icons can spiral back infinitely into the desktop. Scrolling with the mouse wheel can be preserved with precisely the same functionality, more information will be visible than Folder View can display at present, and, with a decent animation, the aesthetics will blow OSX out of the water. |
