I have an old computer but I like so much KDE, so I would like to continue using it right now. The problem is that with so much Plasma's features turned on, par example, my computer doesn't go very fluid.
I suggest implementing like a "Hardware detector" through KDE would select the best features to activate without slowing down the experience of the user. I think it's not so difficult (in fact, I doubted if it was already implemented). Perhaps may exist something similar to this; in that case, please indicate me. Bye bye, Rafa |

This is already done for 3D effects. The Oxygen Qt style in particular could probably use this.

I thought this thread was going to suggest a preset when installing KDE (say, from Live CD) that would optimize KDE by disabling certain options and enabling others.
Obviously , Desktop Effects would be disabled, plasma would be toned down, certain processes and startups deemed unneccessary would be disabled, etc. Of course, they would only be KDE-related. I think that would be a good idea. |

There was an application in 3.x that, in KDE's first run, asked about the system's performance. I don't remember the name exactly.

I'd say something also needs to be done about the activity switching. It's very slow without compositioning when anything on-screen changes while zoomed out. A less intensive method would probably be to make the activities non-interactive, by simply taking snapshots of them the moment you zoom out. Any filtering on these zoomed out views would probably also be disabled.
Since it seems that the aim of KDE4 is to be a bit cleaner and more user-friendly than 3, I'd say that the wizard would have to be rather brief. |
