I realy like quick launch icons on panel, but too much icons on the panel leaves very litle space for running tasks.
My idea is to retain a single icon which (when mouse is over) would open window (similar to description dialog) which would hold program icons (shortcuts). When icon is clicked program is lounched.
New programs would be added by droping program icon to quick launch icon.
Properties could include matrix size of icons (2x5, 1x10, 5x5), size of icons (large, small, 32,16,48)
One of the properties could also be the directory where shortcuts are saved, so there could be more than one quick launch icons on the panel.
New quick launch might also reduce the need for clasical desktop.
When you set current quicklaunch to "show 0 icons" it is doing something like you are describing. There remains just one icon in panel - green arrow - an clicking on it window appears and shows icons. Please look at the screenshot if this is what you want.

I think that could be an improvement to FolderView. You can currently do this:
1. Put many links to applications into a folder 2. Create a FolderView for this folder into panel
Just need a way to simplify the process. Some kind of FolderView that is not an user folder but a virtual one and you can put things into it.
Note: That wouln't show as a grid but there are many similar requests. Iconified FolderView could have a couple of views: vertical listing (current) and grid.

In addition to this, you can select an icon to identify your application folder, and why not create subfolder (But in this case, it would be faster with Lancelot or classical KDE menus / new menu)
I think it would be better to improve the favorites tab in the default main menu (the new kicker, don't know the name). Perhaps to have two columns, one like it is right now on the left and a thin icon bar on the right. Wouldnt need much more space and you could definitly shortcut all your important apps without having a menu with the whole height of the display...

Close.
I don't know how to add another program Icon. Drag and drop is not working. Right click doesn't work.
You have to click on arrow for window to appear (move over should be enough) and then you have to click on arrow again for window to close (lounching program should be enough).

I am using Fedora 10 and KDE 4.2.1

Drag and drop works from kickoff I am not sure about lancelot. This way I added all my icons there. Unfortunately currenty it is not possible to rearrange icons just by mouse as is was possible in quicklaunch in KDE 3.5. Yes, you are right that you have to click but this should be just very simple modification to change it to mouse over. Current implementation is not perfect but I am happy to have at least something. Nevertheless there are people like me who don't like your approach and like to have all icons visible. I would prefer rather to modify behaviour with zero visible icons to have a choice than to have only your approach
