rethinking right-click menus

Sun Mar 22, 2009 5:19 pm
I wish to propose a different system for left-click and right-click actions.
The reason is, that while right click menus are a great place for storing many many options, there are surprisingly many people who never use them and are only dimly aware they exist. (My parents for example).
It might not be obvious to the computer literates - which I'm guessing is all(!) of you reading this post - but the right click menu is not used as much as maybe it should. It confuses people.

I'd like to propose that clicking on any icon in, say, dolphin, results in a display of a circular menu surrounding the icon. Think of the visual style of "the sims":

...in such a way that clicking the middle (essentially performing a double click on the icon) resulst in the default action previously assigned to the left click.

This way, people are more readily confronted with options such as "open with", "encrypt" "rename" "move" etc. Also this method allows us to differentiate between different types of entries in the right click menu by both appearance (colour/icons etc.) and position. That makes it easier for people to process them mentally, remember them and get used to them.
It is much easier to relate to someting with a specific appearance in a specific place (eg. the blueish option to the top and the right) than an entry in a grey meny.

I'd welcome any(!) feedback on this idea.

all the best,

I think first there should be a circle menu. (see another thread, I am working on it) Maybe it could be integrated to the Context-Menu.

as long as this is optional, I think it could be really useful. Sometimes, though, there are more options than will fit well around a circle and designing an icon for each of them could become a pain..

maybe instead of affecting all icons, this could affect only the icons where this would be useful..

perhaps another implementation might be to have only the top five right-click options show up around an icon if the user has the option enabled (option name: cloud-click? :^)
