Clementine recently got support for Spotify and Grooveshark.
That should make it easier to port to Amarok

Exactly what I would suggest. I read last week about the clementine beta. I'm listening to spotify on clementine beta right now, with lyrics and artist info.
Clementine beta also supports grooveshark and many other internet services.
I will make a feature proposal for Amarok.

I really can not see how that obligation can be fulfilled in an open-source application.

If this request is to be taken seriously, open source or not does not matter at all. Both from a theoretical and practical perspective, binary encoding alone cannot provide any significant obfuscation. In fact:
There's also an enlightening Talk by Shafi Goldwasser and a nice two-part overview blog article about the topic.

P.S. Of course, obfuscated source isn't open source. But it's perfectly enough to protect a thin wrapper around libspotify that includes that ominous 'key'.
