[Plasma] Retractable panel

Fri Apr 03, 2009 1:58 pm
I've just recently saw KDE2 for the first time, and there are few features that I would wish that would came back in KDE4.
One of the features is retractable panel.
You might say why do we need that if there's a option to auto-hide or cover the panel.
That is true, but retractable panel is so much cooler than just hiding or covering it.
The only way that I can explain it would be that you try it yourself.
So here is the link to LiveCD (openSuSE11.1)

I think that this would be kind of a cool plasma feature and it would make a lot of sense.
And I (I'm not a dev) think it should be quite easy to implement just some addition to how containments are handled.

I am not sure this is really good for the default panel, but I do think that when they get around to changing panel containments this would be great as an alternative panel. +1

I agree. It doesn't need to be added to default panel. It can be a additional panel, or a plasmoid that affects on panel in this way.
And it's really much better way of handling things than current options.
For me it makes more sense that I retract the panel to the edge than hiding it or covering it, it feels more natural.
And for added eye-candy there could be some Kwin effects that would go with the retracting.
It has to be done gradually like the KDE2 did.
It's one of those old features that makes you think why did they decided not to use it.

Why is KDE not so snappy anymore? Opening a Konsole in this Live-CD takes much less until its drawn onto the screen than in my real openSUSE

It's the price that you pay for feature completeness, eye-candy and things that you'll use once KDE4.3 comes out.
Like Strigi/Nepomik..

No matter how often I buy new computers, how often I spend my valuable money on new computer parts, I can't keep up. All the new speed, all the new memory, gets smothered by the new eye candy and features.

Retractable panel

A plasmoid that could be added to a panel that would retract the panel would be my choice.
