Suggestion of some improvements for the current (KDE4.2) System Monitor plasmoid "panel mode":

- tooltip shows more detailed graph with a "top 5" process list just for the current sensor (CPU, Memory, Net, etc)

mockup (the values do not add up, I know, ignore that):

Similar features for network and disk usage could let you see which process is accessing the disk and trashing the system, etc...

I was just finking about the same :D

But I'd like to the the names of most active processes over (some transparent text with background?) the graph and save space by so :)

Tried making a mockup of what you said:

Dunno if that will not be too cluttered... (maybe you could make a better mockup?)

Anyway, this could also have some other representations, such as bar/pie chars, etc. It is just to show more details in the tooltip.

Actually it would also be nice to have the same kind of functionality you get from System Guard applet in KDE3 with the dropping sensors to the applet and all that.

I would like to propose a different improvement to the panel mode system monitor plasmoid.

I really think that for a panel, always-visible monitor, the most logical information to show is the current, rather than the past, measure (especially for CPU load and memory). With the current graph-like meter, the past information is easier to read than the current one, as the current information is represented by a single pixel in the edge of the graph.

So, I think that the panel mode monitor should be a bar-like meter, as it is very easy to spot the current measure in the limited space of the panel.

Of course, my suggestion doesn't invalidate the previous ones in this thread, as they are completely orthogonal. And I prefer the mockup in the first post, because the information is presented in a less cramped way, and it is not really necessary to save a lot of space, since (as I understand), the graph is a popup- or tooltip-like thing, which is shown only when one wants more detailed information. In normal situations, the extra space is not "wasted". Am I right?
