I am now running Kubuntu 9.04 beta and love it! Over the last days, I have started to explore some of the standard KDE apps and got very pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the calendar has support for timezones when you add a new event. This makes it MUCH easier for me travelling across timezones and making appointments. Congratulations!
It would be equally nice to be able to add timezones to the addresses/phonenumbers in Kontact. If you are contacting someone today, you also have to remember what the time is in their timezone. Otherwise, you might call them in the middle of the night. So it would be nice to have their time displayed in the contact listing.

Ideally the timezone would default to the timezone automatically calculated from the country (and maybe zipcode) from the contacts address.

Sure. Default is nice, as long as there is a way to set the right timezone regardless of the address.
Many countries in the world has several timezones, and I find it very unlikely that any Linux distro will be able to keep track of the zipcodes around the world (and zipcodes are specific for USA. Norway has postalcodes, Brazil has CEP and I have no idea what China and Russia might use...) I think as a start, it would be nice to just get the same drop down menu that we already have in the New event dialogue. The code already exist and will probably save some time in the implementation.

I think, GPS coordinates could be supported too so we could synchronize POI's from our GPS devices like Jon's house etc and attach them to contact entry
Also GPS data could be used for counting time zone |

Sure.. I have over 1500 contacts. I do NOT have the GPS contacts for all of them. But I have a pretty good idea what timezone they are in.
I agree. GPS data is cool. But let us not make this more difficult than it has to be. All that is needed is the exactly same dropdown as in the New event dialogue. That said, GPS data could be really cool if you can pull up a map with a little dot for all your contacts to see where they all live and how they are spread over the map Also, I think GPS data is unaviodable and should get in there just because a lot of other programs will start using it. So because of sync issues, there should be a GPS field for each address. But that is a little beside the point of the timezone thing.

If you have filled out town and country it should not be so difficult to (half) automatically retrieve the time zone via online services.

Exactly. And I do not have that for all of them And still, there is no way that any KDE will know all cities in Brazil (or Norway, for that matter) in a long time. Do not get me wrong, I would love to have it suggest a timezone based on address. But I want to be able to change it easily. In my experience, automatic systems more often than not, get things wrong. But it would make a nice addition to my contacts.

The data object used for handling contacts in KDE, KABC::Addressee actually already has methods to set and get a timezone.
It is most likely just a matter of putting this into the UI in a intuitive way. Cheers, _

Great! Thank you for the info. As I am not a programmer, I have no idea how to figure out code
