Another Gnome like feature I would like to see come to KDE is its deskbar applet.
The deskbar applet is perhaps the most versatile tool in the Gnome arsenal, you can use it for file search, web search, shutdown, dictionary, launching apps and sofourth. KDE is missing something like this, and even though Kickoff does provide some of this I dont feel it as intuitive as the deskbar. I like to hope something like this appears soon in KDE 4 |

Some but I think not all features of deskbar provides run command plasmoid.

The key here is customization, the deskbar applet in gnome can be configured to ones liking. Heck even something like gnome-do would be cool the run command plasmoid is alright, but something with more versatility I think will be welcome

That's why I left this idea "open". I didn't know how different deskbar is from run command, I don't even know how much better Gnome-do is from KRunner. Last time I tried Gnome was with Ubuntu 7.10 or something. So if they have any good ideas I'm all for it.

What, specifically, is better about the deskbar applet? And why wouldn't it be better to incorporate these improvements directly into krunner? You can turn on or off anything you want in krunner, and I assume you would be able to do the same with a krunner plasmoid.

Well yes adding some of the deskbar applet features would be nice in krunner. I am just suggesting a all in one applet that just doesnt run apps, it can also search for files, act as a dictionary, do web searches, search wikipedia and can be mopdified to do more. I know as non Gnome users and Gnome haters its hard to see where in many ways gnome is more versatile then KDE 4 currently is, but I use both Gnome and KDE and to be honest prefer gnome right now. But this is something that possibly KDE 4 can implement in future releases, krunner is fair for what it does but I dont feel its as versatile as deskbar applet or gnome-do |

I still fail to see how this is any different from krunner. Additional runners can be written for krunner to handle all of these.
How so? Krunner has the runner system where you can write runners to do just about anything you want. I have 19 different runner, including a calculator, browsing the filesystem, spell checking, my contacts list, power management, web browser history, unit conversion, and many others. And these runners can be shared elsewhere. I know the Lancelot application launcher already incorporates krunner, so it incorporates all of these features as well.

it is not that we hate gnome, it's just that the most of us are quite unfamiliar with gnome and its abilities. the same way as you seem to be with krunner.
