Is that really something that should be implemented in Dolphin? I'm all for making things as easy as possible, but I'm not really sure Dolphin is the best place to add that.

Definitely should not be in Dolphin. It should definitely be in system settings, though. I think things integrated into Dolphin should only be tasks you do often, while things in system settings should be for more rare actions. I think formatting definitely falls into the latter category.

I requested in dolphin because the user will select the partition and right click and click the format option.

Yes, my point is that it should not be that easy to do something that dangerous. Especially since it needs root privileges anyway.

Besides, it's not easy to see how your hard drive is partitioned in Dolphin, is it? Unless you use some kind of KIO slave like media:/.
But I agree with TheBlackCat, the format action doesn't belong in Dolphin.

Not for partitions. Linux ain't Windows where user need to understand partitions on diskdrives. There is need to allow this for masstorage devices like USB-sticks, but not for USB-harddrives. No one should have a need to format a partition from Dolphin. Linux is Unix-like operating system what does not use C: D: etc. User ain't even forced to have partitions on one root, but can have them on own directories like new disk on /home/username/Documents in example. There is no need to know one directory is a partition. And there is many users who use LVM partitions, so /home can be totally a multiple partitions/disks. So we can not allow Dolphin to format partitions. That is the system level tool, not user level. |
